Duties and Tasks: 

Assist staff by editing all copy prior to publication for AP style and proper grammar and usage. The copy editor in training will receive excellent on the job training for student publications leadership positions.

  • Editing all copy prior to publication on the Web or in print.
  • Assisting editors and other reporters with research and fact checking tasks.
  • Writing of supplementary (non-bylined) pieces for the Accent print and web editions.
  • Possibility of conducting interviews and writing bylined pieces as assigned by editors.
  • Other data entry and light clerical duties as assigned.
Required Skills: 
  • Experience with or interest in journalism.
  • Experience with proper use of Associated Press (AP) style.
  • Journalism or English major having completed copy editing class preferred.
  • Interest in learning about print and online media production.
  • In good standing with college with 2.5 minimum GPA
  • Ability to maintain regular office hours.
  • A positive attitude and strong work ethic.
  • Strong general computer skills including ability to use e-mail, Microsoft
  • Office, and online forms effectively.
  • Professional demeanor both in person and over the phone.
  • Reliable transportation and ability to occasionally travel to locations in
  • the Austin area for the purpose of reporting.
