Support student scholarships at inaugural Riverbat Paddle Battle

Austin Community College (ACC) and American Constructors co-host the inaugural Riverbat Paddle Battle supporting ACC student scholarships 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, April 6, at the Rowing Dock on Lady Bird Lake (2481 Stratford Dr.).

“Nothing is more Austin than kayaking on Lady Bird Lake. We’re excited to use this iconic Austin backdrop to raise money for students,” says Cassandra Wiggins ACC Foundation Board of Directors. “Sometimes it’s the small bumps on the road that can knock a student off course. Each donation can make a life-changing difference.”

The race features three course options to accommodate all skill levels: a two-mile intermediate course, a one-mile novice course, and a 500-yard kids' course.

Following the race participants and guests will celebrate at an after party hosted at the historic American Legion Charles Johnson House. The after party begins at 11 a.m. rain or shine. It  includes a crawfish boil, live music, and activities for the entire family.

Registration starts at $50 and is open to ages 8 and up. Individual tickets to the after party also are available. All of the money raised benefits theAustin Community College Foundation which supports student scholarships and equipment used to train students.

“Scholarships are powerful,” says Vandela Harcrow, ACC math student and scholarship recipient. “It’s hard when you’re juggling work, school, and raising a family. My scholarships gave me the support I needed and made me feel like someone believed in me.”
